This blessing for the males is a combination of the ancient blessing Jacob recited to 2 of his sons, in addition to the priestly blessing recited by Cohanim. It has also been recited throughout the generations by parents while placing their hands on the heads of their children. It is a custom amongst many to bless this after Shabbat candle-lighting and just before singing "Shalom Aleichem", before Kiddush.
